Preparations continued Wednesday morning for the Southern Miss football team as they open their home schedule this Saturday against FCS power Grambling State.

Golden Eagle coach Will Hall said following the workout that the team got a lot accomplished during their practice session as they look to capture their first victory of the season this weekend.

“It was a good Wednesday,” said Hall. “(We had) good focus and we really shored up a lot of our game plan. We had a lot of good red zone work as well as some good work in our punt return and kickoff return units. It was a good overall focus day. Again, we were focusing on ourselves trying to correct he mistakes that we made in game one and getter better from game one to game two. Traditionally in football, it is where you have your largest margin of improvement.”

The Golden Eagles and Tigers will meet for the first time in their respective histories in football as the teams will kickoff at 6 p.m., from Carlisle-Faulkner Field at M.M. Roberts Stadium. The game can be seen online at ESPN3 or heard on an affiliate of the Southern Miss Sports Network by Learfield as well as the SiriusXM app on channel 969.

Hall nothing but praise for Grambling State who defeated Tennessee State 16-10 in the season opener last Sunday in Canton, Ohio. Their coach, Broderick Fobbs, was an assistant for the Golden Eagles during the 2012 campaign who worked with the wide receivers.

“They are a really sound program,” said Hall. “Coach Fobbs has done a great job for a long time. You look at game one and they were the opposite of us. They had only one turnover and only had four penalties and forced two turnovers in the kicking game. They are a sound, well-coached football team starting at the top.”
