UL Lafayette edged the Southeastern Louisiana women’s soccer team, 3-2, Friday night at the Ragin’ Cajuns’ Track and Soccer Complex as the two teams combined for five second half goals.

The Lady Lions (1-3) got goals from Mya Guillory and Mackenzie Maher as the two both scored their eighth careers goals for SLU. Senior goalkeeper Nadine Maher added six saves to aid Southeastern.

SLU and UL Lafayette (2-3) were scoreless at halftime as both defenses clamped down during the first 45 minutes. The Ragin’ Cajuns, however, outshot SLU, 9-4, in the first half.

The in-state counter parts continued to match each other defensively until the 55th minute. UL Lafayette’s Karleen Bedre gave the Ragin’ Cajuns the 1-0 lead on a left foot shot from 15 yards out just past the outstretched arms of N. Maher.

Southeastern quickly responded as they tied the match in the 60th minute. M. Maher, the reigning Southland Offensive Player of the Week, netted her third goal of the season on a great cross right in front of the net from Mia Milton.

The Ragin’ Cajuns immediately answered as Alex Folchert scored on a header off the assist from Bedre less than a minute later to retake the lead.

UL Lafayette added to their lead in the 66th minute as freshman Tatum Beck scored her first career goal to make it 3-1 Ragin’ Cajuns.

Guillory got the Lady Lions within striking distance scoring her second goal of the season in the 69th minute. But that’s as close as the Lady Lions would get as the Ragin’ Cajuns held off SLU for the win.

“After everything we’ve been through this week, I thought the best thing we could do was show our resiliency,” said SLU head coach Chris McBride. “I thought we made some great second half adjustments and kept the pressure on them the entire match. I’m extremely happy with the performance and looking forward to starting conference next week.”

Southeastern finished with 11 shots while the Ragin’ Cajuns had 13. The Lady Lions did a great job of attacking on the outside as they had eight corner kicks to four for UL Lafayette.

The Ragin’ Cajuns Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and Black Student-Athlete Association accepted donations after the match which were to directly benefit the Lady Lions’ program due to the aftermath of Hurricane Ida. Non-perishable snacks, bottled water and sports drinks were collected with members of both organizations delivering to the Lady Lions at the conclusion of the match.

“I really appreciate Lance Key and his staff,” said McBride. “They put together a lot of donations that our athletes will really benefit from this week on the road and I can’t be more thankful to Coach Key and the school for doing that.”

The Lady Lions match Sunday at home with Little Rock was postponed earlier this week due to the widespread affect of Ida to the southeastern portion of the state. Next up, SLU will take on Northwestern State in the Southland Conference opener Friday, Sept. 10th in Natchitoches at 6 p.m.
