State reports more than 10K new COVID-19 cases over weekend

The Louisiana Department of Health reported more than 10,000 new cases of COVID-19, in its update released Monday at noon.

The LDH said there were 10,950 new cases in Monday’s report, bringing the total cases reported since the start of the pandemic to 660,804. There were 5,922 new cases reported Friday.

The LDH does not release a COVID update on Saturday or Sunday.

The state reported 59 new deaths Monday, bringing the total to 11,977 deaths since the beginning of the pandemic in March of 2020. There were 67 new deaths reported Friday.

Also Monday, the LDH reported that there were 2,838 COVID patients in hospitals, and 480 of those patients were on ventilators. In Friday’s report, there were 2,999 hospitalizations and 470 ventilators in use.

LDH officials also reported that non-fully-vaccinated residents made up 89 percent of the cases reported from Aug. 5 through Aug. 11, and 80 percent of the deaths in that same time period. In addition, 91 percent of current COVID hospitalizations are patients who are not fully vaccinated, according to the LDH.

Since the start of the pandemic, Washington Parish has reported 6,780 cases and 161 deaths.
