The Southern Miss football team completed its first fall camp under coach Will Hall Saturday with a 160-play scrimmage at M.M. Roberts Stadium, and it was freshman running back Frank Gore, Jr., again leading the way for the Golden Eagles.

Gore, Jr., rushed for 164 yards on 16 carries with two touchdowns – from 30 and 18 yards – and added three catches for 36 and a 21-yard TD reception.

Hall praised the play of his team’s offensive line during the day who saw three 100-yard rushers in the scrimmage.

“Our O-line really came to play today,” said Hall. “We ran gap schemes and some inside runs and we got some good double teams and some good movement (in the scrimmage).”

Along with Gore’s day, Darius Maberry rushed for 131 yards on 12 carries and Ty Keyes added 114 yards on 12 rushes with a pair of rushing scores from 2 and 12 yards.

Quarterback Trey Lowe threw for 133 yards on 11-of-19 for 133 yards.

Hall, though, also praised the defense who he said made some great plays in certain situations including the third-down periods.  josh Carr, Jr., enjoyed his second pick of the preseason in scrimmage and Dashawn Crawford collected two tackles for loss, while Santrell Latham notched one of the team’s five sacks on the day.

“We made some good stops, especially in the red zone and forced field goals,” said Hall on the defense’s play.

Hall also said it was a great day to end his first fall camp.

“It was another great day with some beautiful weather and the Good Lord cooled it down for us today which we were so thankful,” said Hall. “It looked like we were able to come out healthy, which is what you want. I saw some good and bad, and it was an extremely physical day.”

The Golden Eagles take off both Sunday and Monday – which will be the first day of classes – before returning to the practice fields Tuesday to continue to get ready for the season opener, Saturday, Sept. 4, at South Alabama.
