The Southern Miss football team returned to the practice fields Wednesday morning one day removed from the squad’s first full scrimmage.

It was another hot day for the Golden Eagles – who practiced for the 11th time of fall camp – this day in shoulder pads and shorts.

First-year coach Will Hall said it was important for his squad to get back after things, following the team’s extensive 160-play scrimmage the previous day.

“Coming back off a scrimmage, you want to make sure you have energy and the ability to bounce back and do it again today,” said Hall. “Because you have to work everyday.”

Hall highlighted the interceptions by the trio of Camron Harrell, Jay Jones and T.Q. Newsome during the 2 hour, 30-minute Wednesday practice and also said that the backup quarterbacks, which struggled during the scrimmage, rebounded on Wednesday to have a much better day.

One player that Hall recognized from Tuesday’s scrimmage was graduate transfer Josh Perry, who came to Southern Miss from Memphis, prior to last season. Last year, Perry tallied 14 tackles in eight games.

“Josh Perry had an unbelievable interception yesterday,” said Hall. “It is one of the best plays I have seen. He has really embraced this culture. He is a guy that impacts others. He moved to linebacker and he has gained weight, while also doing some wonderful things in the kicking game and I can’t say enough about his attitude.”

The Golden Eagles return to the practice field Thursday as they continue preparations for the 2021 season opener Saturday, Sept. 4, at South Alabama.
