First-year Southern Miss coach Will Hall said he saw some good things on both sides of the ball following his football team’s first full scrimmage Tuesday morning at The Rock.

“As the head coach that is what you want to see, some back and forth,” said Hall. “If one side dominated the other we probably wouldn’t have a pretty good football team.”

Frank Gore, Jr., led the way for the offense as he registered 145 total yards from scrimmage, including 77 on the ground on eight carries and 68 receiving yards on three catches, including a 35-yard reception for a score from Trey Lowe.

“He played really well,” said Hall about Gore, except for putting the ball on the ground a couple of times during the scrimmage. “He’s becoming a leader. He impacts people in a positive way. I have nothing but good to say about him.”

Lowe ended his day 12-for-20 with 231 yards and two touchdowns along with an interception. His other toss for a score came late in the scrimmage on a 10-yard pass to Darius Maberry. Lowe also added a rushing score from one yard out.

Maberry added 27 yards on nine carries, while Dajon Richard tallied 15 yards on eight rushes. Cole Cavallo, in short yardage situations, added two rushes for three yards, including a 2-yard score.

Quarterback Tee Webb added 12-of-24 passing with two interceptions for 115 yards, while Ty Keyes hit on 7-of-13 passes for 126 yards.

Jakarius Caston led the receiver corps with four receptions for 107 yards, while Jason Brownlee added two catches for 84 yards and Brad Dennis collected three catches for 35.

In the kicking game, Briggs Bourgeois converted both of his extra points and all three of his field goal attempts, with a long of 38, while Andrew Stein was perfect on both his extra point tries and two-of-three field goals, making attempts from 32 and 21 yards.

The defense registered four turnovers on the day with Josh Perry recording a 29-yard interception return for a touchdown. Josh Carr and Caleb Garner also tallied interceptions, while Rachuan Mitchell collected a fumble recovery.

Averie Habas led the way with three sacks, followed by one each from Mitchell Sellers, Austin Todd, Tyrese Hopkins and Devin Thomas.

The Golden Eagles return to the practice field Wednesday morning.
