State reported 57 new deaths from COVID-19 Friday

The Louisiana Department of Health reported 57 new deaths from COVID-19 in its update Friday at noon.

The LDH noted that the 57 new deaths bring the overall total to 11,519 deaths since the start of the pandemic in March of 2020. There were 54 deaths reported Thursday, and 55 reported Wednesday.

For comparison’s sake, the state averaged 30.6 deaths reported per day in August of 2020.

Also Friday, the LDH reported 7,548 new cases of COVID, bringing the total cases reported since the start of the pandemic to 614,776. There were 5,268 cases reported Thursday.

The LDH reported that there were 2,907 COVID patients in hospitals, and 399 of those were on ventilators. In Thursday’s report, there were 2,901 hospitalizations and 386 on ventilators.

LDH officials also reported that non-fully-vaccinated residents made up 90 percent of the cases reported from July 29 through Aug. 4, and 83 percent of the deaths in that same time period. In addition, 91 percent of current COVID hospitalizations are patients who are not fully vaccinated, according to the LDH.

Since the start of the pandemic, Washington Parish has reported 6,081 cases and 148 deaths.
