State COVID update: Hospitalizations at 2,720

The state of Louisiana is at near-record highs in several COVID-19 statistics, according to the update released Monday at noon by the Louisiana Department of Health.

According to Monday’s update, there were 2,720 patients hospitalized statewide. For comparison’s sake, the state averaged 1,192 hospitalizations reported per day in August of 2020.

The state reported 12,227 new cases of COVID-19, which was the highest total ever recorded for a Monday update since the start of the pandemic. The state’s seven-day case report is 28,239, also a new high.

For comparison, the state averaged 1,029 cases per day in August of 2020.

A total of 50 new deaths were reported state-wide in Monday’s report — the August 2020 average of deaths was 30.6 per day.
According to the LDH, approximately 45 percent of the state’s population has received at least one vaccination shot, and 37.8 percent is fully vaccinated.

The LDH reported that un-vaccinated residents made up 90 percent of the cases reported from July 22 through July 29, and 84 percent of the deaths in that same time period. In addition, 91 percent of current COVID-19 hospitalizations are un-vaccinated patients, LDH officials said.
