John Maxon Mitchell of Bogalusa passed away Monday, June 7, 2021, at St. Tammany Parish Hospital in Covington. He was born Nov. 8, 1946, to parents Carl Maxon and Helen Louise Holmes Mitchell at the Desport Clinic in Bogalusa.

A 1965 graduate of Bogalusa High School, John served in the U.S. Army Reserves for 17 years, attaining the rank of Sergeant First Class. Retired from GM&O Railroad, Mr. Mitchell served as Agent-Operator and Yard Master. Mr. Mitchell was a Master Mason, initiated in 1976, and was a long-time member of Center Lodge in Bogalusa.

Mr. Mitchell is survived by his wife, Jo Ann Carrier Mitchell; daughters, Robyn Mitchell Seal (Terry) and Rikki Mitchell Daley; and son, Joshua Mitchell (Katrina). He is also survived by step-children, Teresa Barber Davis (John) and Pamela Barber Reid (Anthony); grandchildren, Erikah, Loryn and Travis Singley, Hailey Singley, Jared, Taylor and Ethan Daley, and Leah and Ava Mitchell; step-grandchildren, Christopher Mizell, Tyler Davis (Lindsey), Hannah Trammel (Will), Justin Brumfield, Jay and Sarah Reid; and also eight great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his brother, Ronald Wayne Mitchell.

Services for Mr. Mitchell were held at Poole-Ritchie Funeral Home in Bogalusa, officiated by Bro. Chad Jenkins of Monroe Street Baptist Church, where Mr. Mitchell was a member.

The visitation was Wednesday, June 9, from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m., with Masonic Rites at 7 p.m. Visitation continued Thursday, June 10, from 2 p.m. until 3 p.m. at Poole Ritchie Funeral Home, with graveside services following at Ponemah Cemetery, with military honors performed by the American Legion Magic City Post #24.
