Locals bring home hardware from nationals

Four locals went to the USA Powerlifting High School and Teen National Meet and had great results in the competition that took place last weekend in Aurora, Colo.

Three won national titles and one lifter came up just short of a title.

Franklinton’s Jaylin Magee and Shelton Jenkins along with Pope John Paul II’s Cael McDaniel won national championships, while Northlake Christian School’s Emmanuel Powell nearly captured a national title.

Magee, who was fourth in the state for the 181.8s in Division II, is the National Junior Varsity Champion in the 83kg-weight class, which is the equivalent of 182.9. Magee posted a 227.5 squat (501.55), 147.5 bench (325.18) and 222.5 deadlift (490.52) for a 597.5 total (1,317.26). Second place was 497.5 (1,096.79).

Besides winning his weight class, Magee won a major award. He was named the best lifter in the Mens Equipped High School JV.

Jenkins, who won the state championship in the 198.3-pound weight class, is the National Varsity Champion in the Equipped 93kg (205 pounds). He posted a 220 squat (485), 187.5 bench (413.36) and 237.5 deadlift (523.59) for a 645 total (1,421.98). Second place was 622.5 (1,372.37). Jenkins also won the Equipped Teen II 16-17s in the 93s. Second place was 625 (1,377.89).

McDaniel, who is a Bogalusa resident, was fifth in the state meet for the Division IV 220.3s.

McDaniel captured the Equipped High School JV 105s (231.48) with lifts of 200 squat (440.92), 125 bench (275.57) and 197.5 deadlift (435.41) for 522.5 total (1,151.91). Second place was 472.5 (1,041.68).

Powell, who is a Bogalusa resident and captured the Division IV state championship in the 275.5s, came in second in the equipped varsity 120+s (264.5). Powell squatted 322.5 (710.99), benched 200 (440.92) and deadlifted 255 (562.17) for 777.5 (1,714.09). He was just 10kg out of first place (22). Powell won the Equipped Teen II 16-17s in the 120s. Second place was 587.5 (1,295.21 pounds).
