Football teams are getting an early glimpse of what their clubs will look like in the fall.

Over the next week, starting today, the four LHSAA teams will compete in their annual spring games.

One team is playing at home in Franklinton, as the Demons take on Jewel Sumner tomorrow.

The junior varsity will start and will run series of plays, starting at 5:30 p.m., followed by the varsity.

The varsity scrimmage will run series of plays before going into working on goal line situations. The scrimmage will end with two 10-minute quarters.

“We have worked during the spring to create some depth at several spots, so it will be a good time to evaluate the progress of our team,” Franklinton coach Jonathan Barber said. “Our players have worked really hard in the weight room to prepare themselves and it is important to them that we come out and perform well.”

There is one game today involving a local team today in Bogalusa, which is one of two teams from Washington Parish with a new coach. Varnado is the other. VHS plays tomorrow.

Cyril Crutchfield takes over at Bogalusa, while Adam Brumfield is at the helm at Varnado.

Bogalusa is traveling to Chalmette and plays at 5 p.m.

“I just want to see them compete,” Crutchfield said. “I want to see that we have improved after 10 days of practicing. Rome wasn’t built in a day, so I don’t expect to see everything clicking on all cylinders. We’re going against a 5A opponent and I expect to see everybody playing hard. I expect them to have some grasp of the offense and defense. We’re not worried about a win or a loss, but we’re concerned about having a positive taste in our mouth going into the summer, building on the positive things and changing the negative things.”

Everything will be live at the game except for anything involving kicking.

Punts will be 30 yards.

Varnado is headed to Springfield for a 6 p.m. start.

“I have been preaching consistency and commitment,” Brumfield said. “Our kids have to learn how to embrace both of those things if we are going to be successful. Right now, we only have a handful of players who have been either of those things and that has to change. Because of a lack of success here in recent years, the commitment level has dropped off and we have to regain that. Talented teams win in junior high. Talented and committed teams win in high school. We have some kids that have talent. We have to get better with our consistency and work ethic in order to get to the level I want to be on. That’s my mission from now to August.”

Next Wednesday, Pine goes to Loranger for its spring game with the competition starting at 6 p.m.

Raiders coach Bradley Seal said the team goal is to get his players experience.

“I really like what I’ve seen out of our team this spring, but we have several players that need experience,” Seal said. “This last week of spring, the scrimmage, and summer is very important to the development of our team.”
