Mt. Hermon School’s Amuriel Williams made the podium after coming in third in the state for the 100 meters and 200 at the Class B state meet that took place at Bernie Moore Track Stadium on the LSU’s campus on Thursday.

“It was amazing,” Williams said about reaching the podium. “I was really shocked and excited.”

Williams ran the 100 in 13.18 seconds in a close race. Lacassine’s Mary Johnson won the event in 13.058 by an eyelash over Bell City’s Kate Leonards for the title. Leonards ran in 13.060

Williams clocked a time of 27.43 in the 200. Episcopal of Acadiana’s Ayden Brown won the state title in 26.40.

“I feel like it was a great accomplishment and it was a great way to show that Mt. Hermon isn’t just for academics, but that we have great athletes,” Williams said on running the two races. “I had to give it all to God and to make my family proud.”

Williams, who is a junior, was at the state meet for the fourth time. She made it from seventh through ninth grade. It was her fourth time to reach state in the 100 and second time in the 200. The majority of last year was canceled by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Williams talked about how her past experiences have helped her.

“‘It helped me realize what I had to do to improve and what I needed to do to make the podium,” Williams said.

Williams said to improve times, she did a lot of sit ups and drills for speed.

Besides the 100 and 200, Williams also runs the 400 and she is on Mt. Hermon School’s 4×200 relay team.
