Pine’s Clark is double-event winner in district

Pine’s Makia Clark was a double-event winner in the District 9-2A Meet, while several more locals qualified for regionals on Thursday at Ponchatoula.

Clark was victorious in the discus and javelin.

Clark had throws of 104 feet, 7 inches and 91-0 in the discus and javelin respectively for the two events. Pine’s Hannah Hughes and Varnado’s Magee were third and fourth in the discus with throws of 65-4 and 58-9 to make it to regionals. Amite’s Briana Tillman was second in the discus at 74-1, while St. Helena College and Career Academy’s Khia Williams was runner-up for the javelin with a distance of 76-1.

Thursday’s meet was a qualifying competition.

The top four finishers from each event are headed to the 3-2A Regional that will be held on Tuesday at Southeastern Louisiana University.

Clark and Varnado’s Asia Magee qualified in the shot put with second and third place finishes after having distances of 30-2 and 22-2.5. Williams won at 32-6.

Pine’s Cameron Magee was third in the 800 meters with a time of 3 minutes, 7 seconds. Amite’s Hai’ley Brumfield won in 3:02.

Also locally, Hughes was fifth in the shot put at 20-8.5.

Hughes and Magee were sixth and seventh in the javelin with throws of 49-11 and 48-1.

Hailey Martin came in sixth for the long jump and eighth for the 100 with results of 13-0 and 15.77. Amite’s Jalencia Pierre won the long jump at 17-8, while Kentwood’s Tanaya Diamond won the 100 in 12.89.

Amite won the team competition with 145 points, as six teams recorded points.

Kentwood was second with 88, followed by St. Helena College and Career Academy’s 71, Pine’s 44 and Independence’s 18 and Varnado’s 10.
