Officials with the National Weather Service in New Orleans said there is a “slight risk” of severe weather for today, Wednesday, March 17, across much of southeast Louisiana.

The severe weather will likely occur during the late afternoon and evening hours. The risks include damaging winds in excess of 60 mph, and potentially hail up to 1 inch in diameter or larger. In addition, tornadoes could form, the NWS said.

NWS officials said it is a good time for citizens to begin considering their severe weather safety plans.

Recommendations for tornadoes include:

  • Make sure all family members know the tornado safe location in your home.
  • Store an emergency kit in your safe location.
  • Identify where to go if you are at work or school.
  • Make a family communications plan.
