On Wednesday, Nov. 4, members of Ingleside Literary Society met at the home of Janice Goff. The members present were Brenda Coleman, Glenda Givens, Janice Goff, Janet Kesterson, Judy Marshall and Cynthia McGehee. Janice Goff served as hostess and, with the help of Janet Kesterson, provided “COVID-friendly” refreshments.

Janet Kesterson, Citizenship Chairman, gave a history of Veterans Day, Nov. 11. The fighting in World War I ended when an armistice between the Allied Nations and Germany went into effect on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month in 1918. In November of 1919, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed Nov. 11 as Armistice Day, which was changed to Veterans Day by President Dwight Eisenhower in 1954.

Cynthia McGehee gave the devotional from “Fixing My Eyes on Jesus,” by Ann Graham Lotz. “There’s nothing in my life or in yours, no circumstance or crisis, no habit or heartache, no sickness or grief, nothing visible or invisible. No one or no thing is greater than God. Put your focus and your trust in the One who has authority over everything.”

In keeping with this year’s theme of “Books Made Into Movies,” Janet Kesterson provided the book review of Girl with a Pearl Earring by Tracy Chevalier. The Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer’s portrait of the anonymous Girl with a Pearl Earring has exerted a mysterious fascination for centuries — and it is this painting that lies at the heart of Tracy Chevalier’s novel of the same title. The novel centers on Vermeer’s Delft household in the 1660’s. When Griet, the novel’s heroine, is hired as a servant to support her family, turmoil follows.
