Varnado is at home Friday night, playing against Kentwood in a District 9-2A contest on Senior Night.

“Kentwood, first district game since we had last week off,” Varnado coach Milton Green said. “Once again, we’re playing a state championship caliber team. Kentwood is a well-coached team. The kids have an attitude of getting the job done on the field, which is a credit to their program of success. We have a chance to host a state championship contender at our house. We hope to be able to control the game and control the clock and have success. It’s very important that we come out with a victory just to keep things to where we can control our destiny. We view every district game as a playoff game.”

Varnado was scheduled to play Amite last week, but the game was canceled because of a positive COVID-19 test at Amite.

Varnado last played on Oct. 16, which was a 62-20 loss against Metairie Park Country Day. Country Day is among those receiving votes, but is not in the top 10 of the Class 1A Louisiana Sports Writers Association poll.

In that game, Jaheim Hooks tallied two touchdowns.

Hooks threw one 30 yards to Zyquantay Bickham and ran for another on a 20-yard run.

Bickham also recovered a fumble in the end zone for a touchdown.

Malik Patterson posted 87 yards and a two-point conversion.

Kentwood, which reached the state semifinals last year, begins this week with a 2-2 record.

Kentwood is among those receiving votes, but is not in the top 10 of the Class 2A Louisiana Sports Writers Association poll.
