The state of Louisiana has seen most of its COVID-19 pandemic-related statistics fall to near historic lows in October, according to information from the Louisiana Department of Public Health.

Through Tuesday, the state had averaged 532.4 new cases reported per day, compared to an average of 594.7 per day in September and 1,029.4 per day in August. Louisiana has averaged 12.6 new deaths reported per day in October, compared to 17.8 per day in September and 30.6 per day in August.

The only months with lower daily case averages are March at the start of the pandemic (226.7), and May (384.4). The only month with a lower daily deaths reported average is March (10.4).

The averages of daily hospitalizations and the number of patients on ventilators have also taken significant drops in October.

So far through the month, the state is averaging a daily census of 559.2 COVID-19 patients in hospitals, compared to 685.6 per day in September and 1,192.4 per day in August.

In October, the state is averaging 69.1 ventilators in use per day, compared to 105.3 per day in September and 185.3 per day in August. There has been no month with a lower average in this statistic so far — the next closest month is June, which had an average of 76.9 ventilators in use per day. The highest month was April, with 396.1 per day.

The drops in October’s averages compared to September occurred even as the amount of testing remained relatively static. This month, the state is averaging 14,809.5 tests per day, compared to 14,813 per day in September.

This month is also the first where the state has been entirely in “Phase Three” of its re-opening, when lockdown and other preventative measures have been at their least strict. Phase Three initially went into effect on Sept. 11, and the measures currently in place will remain until at least Nov. 6.

As of Tuesday, the state had reported 176,681 cases of COVID-19 and 5,572 deaths. There have been 161,792 “presumed recovered” cases since the start of the pandemic.

Washington Parish has reported 1,725 cases and 70 deaths since the start of the pandemic.
