A Bogalusa man was killed Wednesday night in a crash in Washington Parish, according to the Louisiana State Police.

LSP Trooper Jeremy Price said that Wednesday, shortly before 8:30 p.m., troopers from LSP Troop L responded to a crash on Louisiana Highway 60 west of Louisiana Highway 1072 in Washington Parish. The crash claimed the life of John W. Helton, 55, of Bogalusa.

Price said that the initial investigation led troopers to determine that Helton was eastbound on Highway 60 in a Chevrolet C1500 pickup when a deer entered the roadway in front of him. Helton’s vehicle impacted the deer and then exited the roadway into a ditch, where the vehicle began to overturn, Price said.

Price said that Helton was unrestrained and sustained fatal injuries during the crash. He was pronounced deceased on scene by the Washington Parish Coroner’s office.
