Edward “Leon” Sanders passed away on Thursday, May 28, 2020. Mr. Leon’s place of birth was the First Goodridge Hospital in New Orleans, a teaching and training school for African-American nurses.

The first 60 years of his life, Mr. Leon was institutionalized; life was hard. Mr. Leon made Franklinton his home 22 years ago. Upon arriving, Mr. Leon encountered a loving community where he was supported by loving and accepting staff.

Mr. Leon’s journey was one of healing, courage, and change. He built a life and family for himself. He went from standing in the corner, afraid of people, to a traveler, foodie, and lover of life and people. Mr. Leon loved long country drives, red beans and rice with cornbread, coffee, Popeye’s, Burger King, and McDonald’s. His favorite places were Gatlinburg, Atlanta, Disney World, Hot Springs, Memphis, Dolphin Island. Mr. Leon was a supporter of the Franklinton Association for Challenged Citizens. Mr. Leon could be found at any dance or social gathering. Most importantly, on his journey, Mr. Leon learned to believe in people again and taught others like his staff to believe also.

Mr. Leon healed and developed relationships where he was loved and learned to love. At the end of his life, he had his FACC family and was loved by many including his caring staff, Tanya Wilson, Norma Rose, and Kimberly Tate.

In honor of Mr. Leon, may we all try to believe anything is possible.

There will be a visitation held on Saturday, June 6, at Crain and Sons Funeral Home in Franklinton from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m., followed by the funeral service at 11 a.m. with Elder Darren Brumfield, officiating.
