Shelly Dwight Turnage, 40, a resident of Franklinton, passed from this life Monday evening, May 25, 2020, at his home.

He was born in Bogalusa on July 30, 1979, and attended the Franklinton schools. Shelly’s first job was with Cardinal Drilling, and then on to several others through the years, including tugboats, Sharp’s Paint and Body, the City of New Orleans, Asplundh Tree Company, Creel Brothers, Inc. He also worked shut-downs at the paper mill in Bogalusa. Most recently, he worked 12 hours daily, six days a week at the Smitty’s Oil Refinery in Roseland as a line leader, lately focusing on producing hand sanitizer in response to the COVID-19 crisis, which the company was recognized for.

Shelly was a member of Sheridan Jesus Name Holiness Church, formerly Lighthouse Pentecostal Church, where he fell in love with Jesus at the age of 12, and was baptized at Faith Tabernacle Apostolic Church. Learning to play the guitar and drums, with no lessons, only watching and learning from the other young people that had received the Holy Ghost, Eddie, Rhoda, Dewayne and others, he always loved to feel the music. He will be sadly missed by his family and all that knew him.

He is survived by: six daughters, Grace Turnage and Madison Turnage, both of Alabama, Caylix McCain, a Class of 2020 Franklinton High School graduate, Caylin Turnage, Carlie Turnage, and Canda Turnage; parents, Jimmie Turnage and Christy G. Turnage of Franklinton; brother, Mickey D. Turnage; nieces, Riley, Ginger and Danica; half-sister, Jessica Jarrell; aunt and uncle, Jammie and Jeremiah Robinson of Blue Ridge, Ga.; uncles and aunts, Wayne and Kathleen Turnage of Foxworth, Miss., and Doug and Crystal Turnage of Varnado; and his special friend and “Partner in Crime,” Shane Hunt.

He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Susie Grizzle Rester; grandparents, Jessie B. and Addie L. Turnage; and aunts and uncles, Susan and Lenny Bishop, Donna and JuJu Turnage, Janie Sue Turnage and Ed Smith.

Visitation will be at Sheridan Jesus Name Holiness Church on Saturday, May 30, from 5 p.m. until 10 p.m. and after 9 a.m. on Sunday, May 31. A funeral service will be held in the church at 1 p.m. Sunday, May 31, with the Rev. Charles Ray Creel, the Rev. Eric Creel and Eld. Adam Luper officiating. Burial will follow in the Turnage Chapel Cemetery near Kokomo, Miss.

Pallbearers will be Doug Turnage, Dewayne Turnage, Shane Hunt, Jeremiah Robinson, Wesley Lumpkin, Lawrence Chain and Daniel Keating.
