Verene Walter Ree Peters transitioned to her eternal home on Tuesday, April 7, 2020, at North Oaks Hospital. She was a lifelong resident of Angie. Ree enjoyed gardening, reading the Bible, novels of mystery and romance, and putting together challenging puzzles — the more pieces, the more intense her passion grew to complete them. She loved church, her family and family gatherings. Her love for service to her community was evident in her dedication to the scholars she taught as a school teacher. It takes someone special to teach someone special and dedicated to ensuring that concepts were mastered by whatever means necessary, regardless of their circumstances.

Ree married Silous Peters, soon after college. They were married 52 years and were the proud parents of one child, Sharon Annette Peters, who died in a tragic car accident on April 13, 2018, almost two years ago in Chicago, Ill. This loss impacted her health in an unimaginable way. The last year and months of her life was spent at Belle Maison in Hammond.

Verene leaves to mourn her death: a dedicated and loving husband, Silous Peters; close and loving relationship she shared with Evedna and Arthur Mangrum; and also a special bond with cousins, Sharfield, Elaine, Shirley, and Love Joyce Mark. She also leaves a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, and cousins to mourn her passing.

Verene was preceded in death by her parents, Felix and Bessie Owens; a sister, Daisy Ween Owens; two brothers, Arvenue and Eppenezra Owens; and her daughter, Sharon Annette Peters.

A private graveside service will be Saturday, April 11, at noon at Mose Cemetery.
