State’s COVID-19 cases jump by more than 1,000 for 2nd straight day; 2nd death reported in parish

The state of Louisiana has seen its second straight day of an increase of more than 1,000 cases of COVID-19, according to statistics released Wednesday by the Louisiana Department of Health. Also, Washington Parish saw its second reported death from COVID-19.

The LDH reported at noon Wednesday that there had been 6,424 cases reported, and 273 deaths. On Tuesday at noon, there had been 5,237 cases reported and 239 deaths.

It was the second straight day of an increase of at least 1,000 cases — Tuesday’s update had 1,212 more cases reported than Monday’s update, and Wednesday’s update was an additional 1,187 cases compared to Tuesday’s total.

There was a smaller increase in the number of deaths reported, however — Tuesday’s update had 54 more deaths than Monday’s update, while Wednesday’s update had 34 more deaths than Tuesday’s total.

As of Wednesday, there had been 60 parishes that had reported at least one case of COVID-19, out of 64 parishes in the state. There had been 39 reported cases in Washington Parish, with two deaths — the state had reported 28 cases in its Tuesday update.

There had been 270 cases in St. Tammany Parish, with six deaths, and 33 cases in Tangipahoa Parish, with two deaths. Those are the first two deaths to be reported from Tangipahoa Parish.

The LDH said at noon Wednesday that there had been 3,698 tests completed by the state laboratory, and another 42,078 tests reported to the state by commercial labs. That is a total of 45,776 tests — there had been 38,967 tests reported in Tuesday’s update.

The state also reported that there were 1,498 COVID-19 patients in hospitals, with 490 of those patients on ventilators.

There had been 209 tests reported from Washington Parish, as of Wednesday’s update.
