Bogalusa was victorious in the Washington Parish Tournament after defeating Mt. Hermon School, 87-62, in the championship game on Dec. 20 at Pine.
“Since I’ve been here, we have not won any tournament to my knowledge. I know they did some great things back when Kenny (Martin) was coaching. We had a rough first year, we built last year and now we’ve finally got something. I told the boys I may even buy them a T-shirt for it,” Bogalusa coach Randall Ginn said.
The game was pretty much decided in the first half, as the Lumberjacks did a great job of using their pressure defense to create turnovers and they capitalized in points off of turnovers and had a 59-32 lead at the break. The game was up-tempo throughout.
“It might be the best first half we’ve played since I’ve been at Bogalusa,” Ginn said. “It’s the way we’ve been wanting to play. We didn’t have to set up and run halfcourt offense. We don’t have any true post players, so when we have to set up and run halfcourt offense, we struggle.”
Ginn noted a couple of games like against Covington when they scored 39.
“When we’re able to get out and run like this, it gives us a chance to compete with even the bigger schools,” Ginn said.
Ginn credited Mt. Hermon coach Lester Jenkins.
“Lester’s done a great job at Mt. Hermon. I told him before we played that I think he maximizes the talent that he’s got more than anybody in this parish,” Ginn said.
Bogalusa led 23-15 late in the first quarter, but scored eight in a row to open to a 16-point lead.
Javon Bickham, who scored a game-high 24 points that include a pair of 3-pointers, hit a layup to make it a double-digit lead. Tony Harris and Josh Taylor both knocked down 3-pointers for a 31-15 lead that was trimmed to 31-16 through one on a free throw by Ja’Quarrian Alexander.
Mt. Hermon trimmed the lead to 12 at 33-21, but Bogalusa scored nine in a row to open it up to 42-21 by the 5:13 mark of the second quarter.
The run started when Quientay Henry found Harris for a layup to make it 35-21 with 6:22 left. Chance Turner made a fastbreak layup with about 5:45 left and Bickham made two free throws with 5:13 left to make it 39-21. Bogalusa made a steal that led to Demarcus Spikes hitting a shot and getting fouled. Spikes converted the 3-point play and it was 41-21 with 5:13 to go in the first half.
Bogalusa’s lead never went below 18 after the run. The score was 59-32 at the break and 75-46 through three quarters, as Bogalusa went on for the 87-62 win.
Turner tallied 15 points.
Taylor had 13 that included a pair of 3-pointers.
Spikes posted 10.
Harris had seven points, while Henry recorded five, Karry Conerly put up four, Sincere Craft logged three, Anthony Turner posted two and Raheem Roberts and Jahee Roberts added one each. Harris and Henry made a 3-pointer each.
Tevin Williams led Mt. Hermon with 19 points.
Alexander posted 11 points that included a 3-pointer.
Tristan Brumfield had eight, while Travell Brumfield posted seven, Michquel Spears tallied six, Rashad Oatis and Jeremy Bickham put up four each, Keondre Bunch had two and Keey’ontreh Williams posted one. Travell Brumfield made a 3-pointer.
Varnado won the third-place game with a 68-51 win over Franklinton.
The Wildcats jumped out to a 26-10 lead with 5:34 left in the first half. The Demons closed the gap to 30-16 by the 1:51 mark and ended the half on an 11-1 run.
It began with a pair of free throws from Cameron Stewart with 1:26 to go. Franklinton made a steal that led to Stewart connecting with Jaheim Jefferson for a layup. Varnado’s Trevin Haynes made 1-of-2 from the free-throw line for a 31-22 lead with 52 seconds left. But Stewart hit putback from an offensive rebound and Jefferson made a backcourt steal, hit the shot, got fouled and converted the 3-point play to make it 31-27 at halftime.
Varnado opened the second half with an 8-0 run to get the lead back to 12.
Zantonio Peters hit a layup. Darrius Harry passed to Peters for two more and a 37-27 lead. Harry hit a layup for a 39-27 lead.
The Demons closed the lead to nine on a 3-pointer by Stewart, but the was the closest Franklinton could get, as Varnado won led 47-36 through three quarters in the 68-51 win.
Kim McGowan Jr. led Varnado with 18 points that included two 3-pointers.
Peters had 12 points.
Caluntay Jackson posted 10.
Harry tallied nine points, while Haynes recorded seven points, Peters had five, Miguel Fland posted four, Dante Pernell put up two and Michael Fland added one. Harry made a 3-pointer.
Jefferson led Franklinton with 19 points that included a pair of 3-pointers.
Stewart recorded 12 points and he made a 3-pointer.
Keyon Nelson posted seven points, while Avant Monnie had four, Corinthious Dickerson, Khaled Waliagha, Jakob McCormick and Kendarious Brumfield all had two and Stacy Ard put up one.
On Dec. 19, Mt. Hermon defeated Varnado, 61-56.
Tevin Williams led the Yellow Jackets with 16 points.
Spears posted 15 and he made two 3-pointers.
Bickham tallied eight points, while Travell Brumfield and Bunch had five each, Tristan Brumfield and Jordan Harrison recorded four each, Alexander put up three and Keey’ontreh Williams had one in the victory. Travell Brumfield, Bunch and Alexander all made a 3-pointer.
Elizah Miller posted 14 points to top Varnado.
Miguel Fland had 13.
Quanta Peters recorded seven points, while Jackson and Dameon Roberts tallied six each, Montez Trosclair had five, Harry put up three and Michael Fland totaled two.
Also on that day, Franklinton defeated Pine, 64-59.
Monnie led all scorers with 26 points. He made four 3-pointers.
Stewart posted 18 points that included a 3-pointer.
Dickerson tallied six points, while Jefferson and Brumfield had five each and Ard added two.
Karson Voth was Pine’s leading scorer with 16 points. He made a pair of 3-pointers.
Tristan Jones scored nine points, while Adrianuen Johnson and Luke Spears had seven each and Marion Hart posted one. Jones made two 3-pointers.
On Dec. 18, Bogalusa defeated Pine and Varnado won against Franklinton.
Bogalusa’s win was 65-43.
Turner topped the Lumberjacks with 16 points.
Taylor recorded 12 that included two 3-pointers.
Jahee Roberts had eight points, while Bickham and Conerly posted six each, Henry, Raheem Roberts, Daylon Jackson posted four each, A.J. Turner had three and Shadwick Gamble tallied two. Jahee Roberts made two 3-pointers.
Johnson and Voth had 11 points each to lead Pine.
Khalil Washington posted eight points, while Deonte Warren recorded six points, Hart had three, Aurdrlique Dural posted two and Jones put up one. Washington and Warren had a pair of 3-pointers each.
Varnado topped Franklinton, 57-54.
Michael Fland had 17 points to lead Varnado along with six rebounds, an assist, a steal and a block.
Miller posted a double-double with 10 points, 13 boards, three steals, an assist and he blocked two shots.
Bickham had 10 points, seven rebounds, two assists, two steals and he blocked a shot.
Monnie was Franklinton’s leading scorer with 23 points that included five 3-pointers.
Jefferson posted 14 points that included four 3-pointers.
Nelson had five, while De-Airreous Magee and Brumfield had four each and Dickerson and McCormick added two each. Nelson made a 3-pointer.
