Franklinton graduate and Nicholls State University offensive lineman P.J. Burkhalter was told he could never play football again because of low kidney function.

But Burkhalter, who is a redshirt junior, kept believing that he could and continued working.

This was his third year back playing football and he had earned a couple of all-Southland Conference accolades.

Last year, he was all-conference honorable mention. Then, he was selected as a first-team all-conference preseason offensive lineman.

But then Tuesday came and his hard work, dedication and talent got him an amazing honor.

Burkhalter is the Southland Conference Offensive Lineman of the Year.

It really shows what happens when you fight through tough situations. He fought through an extremely difficult one and came through strong.

Burkhalter and the Colonels went 8-4 overall this season and captured their second-straight Southland Conference Championship. The team is in the FCS playoffs and hosts North Dakota in the opening round on Saturday at 3 p.m.

Congratulations to Burkhalter and we wish him and the Colonels continued success.
