Parish to be well-represented at state

SLIDELL — Washington Parish will be represented by several powerlifters at the state meet this month.
Franklinton’s Shimon Davis, Drake Jenkins, Spencer Lambert, Joe Magee, Zack Brumfield, Dakota Gulsby and Mason Givens, Bogalusa’s Derek Keating and Varnado’s T’Andrew Foster are all headed to state.
Lifters qualify for through their regional meets. Ten lifters per weight class in each classification made it to state. Six regionals took place. Winners from each regional automatically reached state and then the top lifters among the non-winners qualified.
The state meets will take place March 14-16 at the Rapides Parish Coliseum in Alexandria.
All three schools competed in the South Regional at Pope John Paul II last Saturday.
Davis is headed to the Class 4A meet after he was eighth in the regional with a 765 total for the 132-pound weight class. Davis squatted 270, benched 185 and deadlifted 310. Covington’s Logan Pennington won with a 1,275 total.
Jenkins was seventh in the 198s with a combined 1,105. He recorded a 405 squat, 275 bench and 425 deadlift. Lakeshore’s Terry Ferrier was the winner at 1,400.
Lambert was seventh in the 220s with a 425 squat, 215 bench and 440 deadlift for a 1,080 total weight. Fontainebleau’s Grant Saizan was victorious at 1,520.
Magee is to state in the 242s. He was fifth with a 1,285 total. He had a 485 squat, 330 bench and 470 deadlift. Slidell’s Cameron Williams was the winner with a 1,470.
Three locals made it to state in the 275s, including Brumfield, Gulsby and Keating after taking fourth, eighth and 10th respectively in regionals.
Brumfield tallied a 1,210 total with a 445 squat, 325 bench and 440 deadlift.
Gulsby lifted a 1,085 total. He squatted 440, benched 205 and deadlifted 440.
Keating is part of Bogalusa’s first-year program. He is going to the Class 3A state meet with a 1,015 total. Keating squatted 375, benched 265 and deadlifted 375.
St. Paul’s School’s Jason Toups was victorious at 1,710.
Givens returns to the state meet with a seventh-place regional finish in the super heavyweight division. Givens had a 1,210 total with a 400 squat, 340 bench and 470 deadlift. Givens tallied an eight-place finish in state last year with a 965 total in the title meet. Fontainebleau’s Christian Cockran won the regional at 1,465.
Foster is headed back to the Class 1A state meet after coming in 17th at regionals. Foster recorded a 235 squat, 165 bench and 305 deadlift for 705. Foster was fourth in the 132s in last year’s state meet with a 670 total. St. Paul School’s Mason Impastato won the regional with a 1,200 total.
Pennington was the Outstanding Lifter for the 114-165 pound weight classes while Holy Cross’ Alex Davis (181 pound weight class) was the Outstanding Lifter for the 181-super heavyweights.
Holy Cross won the team event with 40 points, edging out St. Paul’s by just one point. Covington (30) was third, followed by Fontainebleau (27) and Lakeshore (24) rounded out the top five as 12 teams put up points.
Franklinton tied Archbishop Hannan, Northlake Christian School, Pearl River and Northshore for eighth.
