Wildcats strong in District 8-1A Meet

Varnado had a big day in the District 8-1A Meet, as Armontee Kemp captured a pair of events, Kevis Brooks won an event and several other Wildcats qualified for regionals on Wednesday at St. Martin’s Episcopal.
Kemp qualified in four individual events.
Kemp swept the hurdles and was second and third in two other events.
Kemp ran the 110-meter hurdles in 16.25 seconds. Houma Christian School’s Joseph Townsend was second at 17.24. Varnado’s Adrian Bickham took fourth in 20.03.
Kemp recorded a 42.84 in the 300-meter hurdles, as Townsend was second in 46.57.
Kemp finished as the runner-up in the high jump, clearing the bar at 6-foot-4. West St. John’s John Holmes won at 6-4.
Kemp and Jaccourious Bickham ran third and fourth in the 100 with times of 11.72 and 11.98. Covenant Christian Academy’s Devonte Johnson won in 11.46.
Brooks was victorious in the 200 after posting a 23.80. Teammate Desmond Harry was second in 24.15.
Varnado was second in the team competition, finishing just six points from first place, as eight teams put up points.
West St. John won the meet with 139 points.
Varnado was second with 133.
Covenant Christian Academy was third at 106, followed by St. Martin’s Episcopal’s 76 and Houma Christian School with 49.
Wednesday’s meet was a qualifying meet. The top four finishers from each event are headed to the 3-1A regional that will take place Tuesday at Ponchatoula.
Varnado is the only school from Washington Parish in District 8-1A.
Several other Wildcats also qualified for regionals.
James Williams and Darian Vargas took second and third in the javelin with throws of 128-10.5 and 125-1. Covenant Christian’s Collin Davis won at 137-5.
Quincy James was third in the long jump with a distance of 19-8.5. Johnson was the winner at 20-3.25.
He was also third in the 400 with a time of 54.67. Holmes won in 51.47.
Cameron Allen and Caleb Allen were third and fourth in the triple jump with distances of 40-8 and 38-2. West St. John’s Jonathan Porter won at 41-1.5.
Jarvis James was fourth in the 800 at 2 minutes, 19 seconds, as St. Martin’s Rico Coleman ran a 2:09 to win.
Varnado ran second in all three relays.
The 4×100 team completed the race in 46.32. The 4×200 ran in 1:34 and the 4×400 time was 3:49.
The 4×100 runners were Korterrius Mingo, Darrius Harry, Desmond Harry and Jaccourious Bickham. Mingo, Jaccourious Bickham, Desmond Harry and Brooks ran the 4×200 and Caleb Allen, Cameron Allen, Vargas and James were the 4×400 runners.
West St. John won all three relays with times of 46.24, 1:32 and 3:38.
Several more Wildcats competed.
Vargas was seventh in the long jump at 17-2.75.
Jadarrell Magee and DeMarcus Boston were eighth and ninth in the shot put with distances of 33-10 and 33-7. Covenant Christian Academy’s Brayden Short won with a 44-1.
Magee took fifth in the high jump at 5-4.
Adrian Bickham and Jo’Nathan Green finished fifth and seventh in the discus with throws of 109-5 and 84-8, as Short won at 158-6.
Jalen James ran a 6:18 for sixth in the 1,600, as Coleman was the winner in 5:03.
T’Andrew Foster was seventh in the 800 with a time of 2:32
Cameron Allen finished sixth for the 400 in 58.03.
