Schools, churches plan veterans’ events

Veterans Day will be Saturday, Nov. 11, but local schools, churches and other organizations will be celebrating our armed forces all week long.

The following is a list of activities that are going on in our area to honor local veterans. If you have an event that you would like added to the calendar, please email it to justin.schuver@bogalusadailynews.com.

 

Sunday

  • Highland Baptist Church, located at 21022 Highway 21 in Bogalusa, invites veterans to attend special activities the church is conducting to honor them. The services will be Sunday, Nov. 5, and include a veterans’ breakfast in the fellowship hall from 9 a.m. until 10 a.m., and a church service from 10:30 a.m. until 11:45 a.m. in the sanctuary. Veterans are encouraged to bring photos of when they were in service. For the 10:30 a.m. service, the Magic City Post 24 of the American Legion will provide flag ceremonies, the national anthem, a 21-gun salute and the playing of “Taps.” Other activities will include music provided by the children, youth, adult choir, church members and a pastoral tribute to veterans.

 

Monday

  • On Monday, Nov. 6, the Northshore Charter School faculty and students will host their third annual “Veterans’ Breakfast” to honor all area veterans. The agenda includes breakfast at 7:30 a.m. and a program to follow, scheduled to end by 10 a.m. or 10:15 a.m. Beginning at 7:30 a.m., veterans and guests will enjoy a tasty breakfast, after which the school’s choral group will present a musical number, and other students will address the veterans. Dr. Whit Gallaspy will be the special speaker for this occasion. At the end of the ceremony, all students and guests will watch as Bogalusa’s famed 40 & 8 present a 21-gun salute. All veterans are invited to attend.

 

Friday

  • Varnado High School will have a Veterans Day program on Friday, Nov. 10, with guest speaker Angelo Pepe. The breakfast will be at 8:30 a.m., followed by the program at 9:30 a.m.
  • Ben’s Ford Christian School invites all veterans to attend their annual Veterans Day Program on Friday, Nov. 10. Breakfast will be served in the school cafeteria at 8 a.m. for all veterans and guests attending. Breakfast will be followed by a patriotic program in the school gym, presented by the seventh through 12th graders. BFCS is honored to have U.S. Rep. Ralph Abraham come to deliver a special address to all veterans and guests. The 40 & 8 honor guard will also be in attendance to present the colors, and at the end of the program they will honor our veterans on the football field with a 21-gun salute and the playing of “Taps.” All veterans are cordially invited to come and be a part of this special tribute as we honor those who have served our country so well.
  • Franklinton Elementary School will be hosting a Veterans Day celebration on Friday, Nov. 10. The school invites military relatives, as well as all local veterans, to attend. The program will begin at 1:30 p.m. and will be followed by light refreshments. Those who plan to attend should contact the school at 985-839-3580.
  • Pine Jr./Sr. High School will be hosting its 19th annual Veteran’s Day Program on Friday, Nov. 10. The school would be very honored if veterans and their spouses/guests would attend. Breakfast and fellowship time will begin at 8 a.m., followed by the program.
  • The officers and representatives of the Bowling Green School student council cordially invite veterans to BGS’s annual Veterans Day Program on Friday, Nov. 10. Lunch will be served at noon in the school’s sports complex. Veterans and their spouses are welcome. Immediately following the lunch, a brief program will be held in the gym. Veterans will be recognized and honored during the program through a special PowerPoint presentation. If you would like your photo included in this presentation, drop it off by the school’s office before Tuesday, Nov. 7. Saturday, Nov. 11

  • All active and retired military families are invited to an educational program at the Majestic Occasion Center, located at 1737 Beulah Ave. in Tylertown, Miss., on Veterans Day. Families of deceased veterans are also welcome. The program will be Saturday, Nov. 11, at 8 a.m. and a complimentary breakfast will be served.
