Wayne “Sonny” Corkern. age 77, a resident of Poplarville “Crossroads” Miss, passed away on Wednesday, April 5, 2017 at Highland Community Hospital in Picayune, Miss. Sonny was well known as a local law enforcement officer with the Mississippi Wildlife and Fisheries. He was owner and operator of Washington Parish Ambulance Service for many years with his wife Mattie Fay Corkern. Also, owner and operator of St. Tammany Speedway in Lacombe, La.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Mattie Fay Corkern; his son, Todd Corkern; his parents, Talmage William Corkern and Mable Wheat Corkern.
He is survived by two daughters, Veronica Messiner of Picayune, Miss, and Melanie King of Pearl River, Miss; a son, Tim Corkern (Casey) of Newton, Texas; a sister, Leatrice Mitchell (Danny) of Bogalusa, La.; a brother, Donald Corkern (Faye) of Deridder, La.; 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.
Visitation will be held at Poole-Ritchie Funeral Home on Friday, April 7, 2017 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Funeral Services will be held at Bethel Baptist Church at 11 a.m. with Pastor Dan Finley and Pastor Billy Smith officiating. Interment to follow at Kennedy Cemetery in Crossroads, Miss. with Masonic graveside services.
