On Sunday morning, April 10, Cherith B. Sheppard, 27, a resident of Raymond Street in Houma, arrived at Rayburn Correctional Center (RCC) to visit with an inmate. The RCC canine, which is utilized for regular checks of vehicles on prison property, alerted the staff to the presence of narcotics in Sheppard’s vehicle. RCC staff searched the vehicle and discovered a small amount of marijuana and 90 pills.

The Washington Parish Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene and took Sheppard into custody. She was transported to the Washington Parish Jail with bond set at $3,500 and charged with Introduction of Contraband into a Penal Institution and Possession of Schedule IV drugs. She met the conditions of bond and was released the following day.

Sheriff Randy Seal commented on the arrest at RCC.

“Our office has a wonderful working relationship with Warden McCain and the entire RCC staff. RCC is a valuable asset to our parish, not only as a provider of jobs, but also as a law enforcement partner who is always ready and willing to assist the Sheriff’s Office when called upon. I congratulate them on locating these drugs before they could possibly be brought inside the prison and am so grateful for their service to our community.”
