Little League field added to city park

Next week, area Little League teams will have one more regulation ball field to use in Bogalusa.

On Friday, the city parks department was installing a back fence at the park at Long and Main Street. Landon Tims, the director of the department, said he expected the fence to be completed early next week.

In addition to the fence, Tims said the city would carve out triangle-shaped areas for bases, although not baselines.

“It’s easier to maintain and it’s more of just a practice field,” he said.

The field will also not have lights.

However, city councilman Brian McCree said he expects teams to play on the field during daylight hours.

McCree has said at past city council meetings that the one lighted field gets swamped during baseball season with Little League teams that have to wait in line to play their games. McCree has said the wait times make it hard for families to plan dinner and other afterschool activities, and this field should relieve some of that pressure.

“It’s right on time,” said McCree, noting that baseball season begins in April.

“I’m very grateful,” he added. “The kids are going to be very grateful. I want to thank (public works director) Mr. James Hall for his support of the Little League.”
