On Saturday, Feb. 13, the newly formed Annunciation Catholic School 4-H club came and planted 100 pounds of potatoes at the ESM United Methodist Church Widow’s Garden. This is a community garden open to all, and its mission is to help feed the community with high quality, home-grown vegetables.

The kids showed up at 9 a.m., where the Methodist Men treated them to donuts and sausage biscuits before the Rev. Bill Moon gave a quick lesson to the kids on soil preparation and pH. Afterwards, these kids hit the field planting and covering potato slips.

The garden is the brainchild of local doctor Whit Gallaspy, who teamed with landowner Charles Pepe to turn an old overgrown field into something useful for the community.

Over the last three years, it has grown from a very small plot to approximately two acres. In the coming weeks, the garden will have onions, tomatoes, sweet potatoes, green beans, peas, squash, tomatoes and other requested vegetables.

Church staff ask that anyone who picks vegetables for personal use should also take the time to pick some for someone who can’t pick for themselves.
