Lady Bucs win district tournament

Bowling Green’s Lady Bucs not only won the regular-season district title this year, but followed it up with a championship in the district tournament as well.

The Lady Bucs defeated Silliman 47-29 on Saturday night, winning the District 5AAA tournament, which was held at Silliman. Bowling Green advanced to the South State Tournament, which starts this week at Columbia Academy.

The Lady Bucs advanced to face Brookhaven Academy, the No. 4 seed from District 4AAA, at 4 p.m. Tuesday. That game was not completed by press time.

The winner of that game will face either Columbia Academy or Centreville Academy on Friday at 5:15 p.m.

Against Silliman in the district title game, Bowling Green broke out to an 8-1 lead after one quarter of play. The Lady Bucs scored the game’s first seven points before Silliman got on the scoreboard.

Bowling Green led 25-12 at halftime, and 41-17 after three quarters.

Katelin Junkins led the Lady Bucs, with 11 points. Sydney Watson added nine points and McKinley Seal scored eight.

Ashley Foret added six points, and Shelby McDonald and Hollie Wascom scored four points each. Hallie Robertson added three points, and Cailee Fruge scored two.

Junkins also led the team with eight rebounds. Seal added six, and Watson and Foret each pulled down four rebounds.

The Lady Bucs’ defense made a big difference in the game. Seal led the team with seven steals, and Watson and Foret had six steals each.

Foret led the team with five assists.

On Friday night, Bowling Green defeated Central Private by the score of 70-14.

The Lady Bucs led 24-3 after one quarter, and 42-4 at halftime.

Foret led Bowling Green with 18 points, and McDonald added 13.

Junkins added eight points, and Watson scored six. Three players added five points — Robertson, Mason Edwards and Jadyn Jenkins.

Seal and Peyton Stogner finished with four points each, and Cailee Fruge added two.

Fruge led the team with six rebounds, and Seal added five.

Bowling Green was especially strong from 3-point range against Central Private, finishing 11 of 24 for 45.8 percent.

McDonald was 3-for-3, Watson was 2-for-2, and Foret was 4-for-7. Robertson and Edwards each hit a 3-pointer, as well.
