A Bogalusa man was arrested Sunday evening in Jefferson Davis Parish, after allegedly stealing a car earlier that day in Bogalusa.

Jefferson Davis Parish Sheriff’s Deputy Commander Chris Ivey said that Louis Davis, 34, of Highway 1074 in Bogalusa, was spotted walking away from an abandoned 2007 Honda Pilot on an I-10 exit ramp. Deputies ran the tags on the car and found it was reported stolen.

According to information from the Jefferson Davis Parish Sheriff’s Office, Davis told deputies he’d borrowed the car. However, sheriff’s deputies checked with Bogalusa police and they confirmed the car was stolen.

Jefferson Davis Parish is about 195 miles west of Washington Parish.

According to Bogalusa Police Chief Joe Culpepper, Trent Temples, one of the car’s owners, reported the car stolen stolen at 6 p.m. on Sunday.

In an interview Tuesday, Temples said his wife told him someone had taken her car and was driving away. For a second, he didn’t believe her.

“Well, at first I thought my wife was joking that it was her car, and I looked over at where her car was parked and I didn’t see it,” he said.

Then, he said, they both watched it disappear.

“We saw it going down the street,” he said.

Davis was charged with illegal possession of stolen things and driving under suspension, and was booked into the Jefferson Davis Parish Jail.

According to JDPSO officials, Davis also allegedly tried to steal a car in Jefferson Davis Parish on Sunday.

Ivey said he would not be transferred from jail until he pays a $10,000 bond. Ivey also said Davis claimed his family in Bogalusa had been murdered.

“He did make some statements about family members being killed,” Ivey said. “Our deputies contacted authorities in Bogalusa to warn them and have someone contact the family to verify that they were unharmed. Bogalusa authorities could not find anyone injured or killed, to our knowledge.”

It’s not clear what condition the vehicle is in.

“It was broke down and that’s why he was walking,” Ivey said. “We don’t know if it just ran out of gas or if there was a mechanical issue.”

Ivey said the car was being towed to Washington Parish.
