“Remembering Katrina” was Thursday’s theme for Bogalusa Country Club’s Ladies Day Luncheon.

Hurricane Katrina hit Louisiana on Aug. 29, 2005 as a Category 3 storm and left devastation in its wake in Bogalusa and throughout Louisiana and Mississippi.

“Everybody woke up the next morning and had trees on their houses and in their yards,” hostess Ruth Statham said. “For days, we were cut off from everybody. It devastated the whole town. Just about everybody was affected in some way or another.”

Hurricane Katrina damaged cellphone towers, which knocked out communicating with the outside world for the most part.

“Probably the biggest story of Hurricane Katrina affecting Bogalusa was the lack of communications,” Stathan said. “You just couldn’t get through to anybody. It brings back a lot of memories of how Katrina affected people and their families.”

As hostess, Dillon was responsible for the decorations at the luncheon. Decorations included lanterns, chain saws, hip boots and Katrina remembrance photo albums.

The Ladies Club numbers 25 members. Of that number, approximately 20 are Golden Girls whose task is to help raise funds for the Country Club. The club meets each Thursday at the Country Club. The Golden Girls have been a part of the Country Club for 30 years.

Golden Girl member Rosemary Marx, who turned 100 in April, attended the meeting. She has been a member for 62 years.
