Herman Whitfield

Herman G. Whitfield, age 95, born on Aug. 25, 1919, in Bethel, N.C., passed away on Wednesday, May 20, 2015, at his residence in Bogalusa.

He was a WWII veteran serving 33 years as a master drill sergeant in the United States Army and Reserves. He was a member of First United Pentecostal Church since 1971.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Doris E. Whitfield.

He is survived by three daughters, Vaudie L. Whitfield, Vickie (Ronnie) Baughman and Evelyn (Karl III) Starnes, all of Bogalusa; one son, Ronnie (Dana) Whitfield of Bogalusa; grandchildren, Phillip Ray Lorio, Kerri Z. Crawford, Ryan Whitfield, Brandy Starnes, Shelby Whitfield, Karl Starnes IV and Circe Bridges; great-grandchildren, Randa Corkern, Kristen Saucier, Harleigh Brown, Jasmin Whitfield and Penelope Bridges; and two great-great-grandchildren, Lily Corkern and Mila Corkern.

Visitation was held at Poole-Ritchie Funeral Home on Thursday, May 21, 2015, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Visitation will continue at Poole-Ritchie Funeral Home Chapel on Friday, May 22, 2015, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Travis Houston and the Rev. Ronald Wilson officiating. Interment will follow at Ponemah Cemetery, with full military graveside services by the Magic City American Legion Post No. 24.
