Dewell D. Pittman, age 95, was born Feb. 1, 1920, in Varnado. He departed this life on Wednesday, April 22, 2015, at Our Lady of the Angels Hospital in Bogalusa.

Dewell was a graduate of Varnado High School Class of 1937 and graduated from Louisiana State University with a degree in law. Before graduating from law school, Dewell joined the United States Army for two years before transferring to the United States Air Force.

Dewell was a B-29 navigator during WWII, traveling to many different areas, including Japan.

His B-29, flying out of Saipan, was one of the first B-29 bombers used over Japan during WWII.

After returning from WWII, Dewell continued his studies at Louisiana State University, finishing his degree in law, and remained in the Air Force reserve, retiring as lieutenant colonel in 1980.

In 1948, he opened his law practice in Bogalusa, serving the community for over 60 years. He and his lovely wife of 67 years were well known and loved throughout the community. They were members of First Baptist Church of Bogalusa for many years.

Dewell was preceded in death by his wife, Yvonne B. Pittman; two sons, Dewell “Craig” Pittman and Bryan “Keith” Pittman; his parents, Iddo and Emma Seal Pittman; one brother, Bernard Pittman; and two sisters, Onez Pittman Owens and Myra Pittman Miley.

He is survived by four nieces and two nephews.

Visitation was held at Poole-Ritchie Funeral Home on Thursday, April 23, 2015, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. The funeral services will be held at Poole-Ritchie Funeral Home Chapel on Friday, April 24, 2015, at 11 a.m. Interment will follow at Seal Cemetery in Varnado, with military graveside services by the Magic City American Legion Post No. 24.
