A Bogalusa resident remained in University Trauma Center in New Orleans on Friday, two days after her Hyundai Elantra hit a bridge near Varnado on Louisiana Highway 21.

Candice Applewhite, 34, was traveling north from Bogalusa Wednesday morning when the accident occurred. She was transported by ambulance to Lakeview Regional Medical Center in Covington and then on to New Orleans. She is listed in stable condition.

According to grandmother Barbara Applewhite, her granddaughter suffered a broken leg in three places, a badly injured right hand and cuts and bruises to her face, arms and neck. She was in a neck brace as of Friday afternoon and faced plastic surgery to her face and right hand. She is left-handed, according to her grandmother.

Barbara Applewhite said the car bounced off one side of the bridge and collided with the other side.

“She is lucky to be alive,” Barbara Applewhite said. “She is in a lot of pain. She had just left my house. The State Trooper said she had to be flying.”

Candice Applewhite was issued citations for not wearing a seat belt and reckless operation. A pet chihuahua, Chloe, survived the crash.
