The Franklinton Woman’s Club raised $2,400 last week during the organization’s Love Coffee benefit at Centenary United Methodist Church.

Proceeds from the benefit will be split between the Help Center of Churches and the Washington Parish Activity Center.

Approximately 100 people attended Thursday’s event. Last year’s event raised $1,700, according to Love Coffee publicist Lana Branch. The benefit is in its 39th year.

“The Help Center of Churches provides food and assistance to people who are down on their luck,” Branch said. “The Help Center is also sponsoring a food drive in Franklinton. The other cause we’re involved with is the Washington Parish Activity Center, a place for challenged citizens.”

Debbie Brock is executive director of the Washington Parish Activity Center.

“We work with adults with developmental disabilities as well as the aged population,” Brock said. “We support the disabled with vocational services and community living. We support the aged population by helping them live in their own homes.”

The Washington Parish Activity Center was established in 1968.

“We’ve been providing services to the Washington Parish community ever since then,” Brock said.

Brock said the official name of the organization is Franklinton Association for Challenged Citizens. Its shop on Washington Street is called “Something Special.” It’s a place where the handicapped have a chance to work. The shop sells sweet treats and clothing.
