Presentations and board appointments were among the light business handled during a Washington Parish Council meeting Monday.

Kreig Todd, founder and president of the Memory Walkers of Washington Parish, made a presentation on Alzheimer’s, the sixth-leading cause of death in the United States.

He said five million Americans are living with the disease.

Todd asked the council members to support the Memory Walkers by helping the organization promote regular doctor’s visits and by helping to share information about the disease.

He said the local walk, which is a fundraiser for the Alzheimer’s Association, will take place Sept. 13 at the parish fairgrounds.

During his report, Parish President Richard Thomas presented two proclamations.

The first designated February as Career and Technical Education Month, and the second proclaimed February as National African-American History Month.

Thomas also announced that Jackie Varnado has retired as Justice of the Peace for Ward 6, and Chris Lewis has been appointed as justice of the peace pro tempore for that ward.

The appointment was made by Louisiana Supreme Court Justice Greg Guidry, and Lewis will retain his office as Ward 5 justice of the peace.

Additionally, the council approved the reappointment of Vice Chairman Avant Vernon and Commissioner Gary Fenner to the Mt. Hermon Water District. Their terms will expire Dec. 31, 2016.
