Delgado redshirt sophomore Clay Tageant, who transferred from LSU-Eunice after last season, recorded his first win with the Dolphins in the second game of Saturday’s doubleheader against Bishop State.

The 2011 Franklinton graduate came out of the bullpen with a runner on third and two outs in the fifth inning and the game tied 3-3.

When asked what was going through his mind when he entered, he said, “Just don’t let that guy score.”

And he didn’t.

Tageant threw three fastballs with the last one being a comebacker, which Tageant handled and threw to first to end the inning.

“If I want to be able to play a role on this team and come in in situations like that, you’ve got to get out of those situations,” Tageant said.

Tageant pitched the next two innings, allowing just one bloop hit to right field in the sixth.

In the bottom of the frame, the Dolphins (3-1 at press time) gave Tageant more than enough support, putting up four runs to take a 7-3 lead.

He made it pay off as he retired Bishop State in order the final frame, getting the final two hitters to strikeout looking to cap the 7-3 win and doubleheader sweep.

Tageant threw 2.1 shutout innings of one-hit ball with three strikeouts.

“I felt good,” Tageant said. “Sometimes you get in that zone where nothing really faz es you. I had my good stuff today. I felt good, felt confident with strikes. I came in with a runner on third, and to be able to make three pitches and get out of it against one of their better hitters was good.

“From then on, I knew we were going to put up runs. It was definitely easy that last inning getting three guys out when they put up four runs in the sixth.”

It was Tageant’s second appearance this season. He pitched in the opener Feb. 1 and allowed two runs in 0.1 innings before leaving with a nosebleed.

Because of the doubleheader, games were seven innings. Delgado won the opener 7-4.

The Dolphins were scheduled for a doubleheader yesterday against Copiah-Lincoln Community College at home. Thursday to Sunday Delgado is hosting the Rags Scheuermann Memorial Tournament.
