Delores Hutchinson Powell passed away Thursday, Dec. 26, 2013, at Chalet Nursing Home in Chicago.

She was born in Bogalusa on July 24, 1947, and spent her early years there, graduating from Central Memorial High School in 1964. After her graduation from Southern University in Baton Rouge, she and her family made their home in Chicago.

She is survived by two daughters, Janae Powell and Jenise Powell; a son, Jason Powell of Chicago; three sisters, Yvonne (Tom) Watson, Chicago, Phyllis (Johnny) Strawder of Houston and Veronica Smith of Bogalusa; two brothers, Michael (Brunetta) Adams of Baton Rouge and Byron (Dawn) Adams of Lithonia, Ga.; two granddaughters, Elle Janae Johnson and Ezra Anne Powell; a special aunt, Ethel Batiste Henry; cousins Wilda Faye Peters, Ernestine Hutchinson, Brenda Magee, Marsha Sartin, Fred Daniels, Derana Batiste-Newton, Ira Batiste Sr, Cheryl Batiste, Willie Batiste, Ralph Batiste, Erica Brumfield and Sybil O’Ree; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James Powell, and her parents, Mary Hutchinson, Lincoln Hutchinson and Ray Adams.

A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 3 at Bethlehem Baptist Church. In the spring, a celebration of her life and legacy will be held by family and friends in Chicago.
