TAYLOR

Alcie Taylor Sr. was born in Poplarville, Miss., to the late Al and Lillian Taylor on Dec. 18, 1918. He was the baby boy of five children. He graduated from George Washington Carver High School in Poplarville.

Alcie met Catherine Battiest at an early age and they became the best of friends and fell in love. They were married on Dec. 26, 1938, and out of this union they were blessed with 10 children.

He accepted Christ at an early age and joined Mt. Zion Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon under the leadership of the late E. D. Burns.

Alcie served in the U.S. Army as a military police officer. Out of the 72 years of his marriage, the only time he and his wife were apart was during his time of duty.

He worked at Crown Zellerbach, where he was a box corrugator, and he retired after 20 years. He joined of the Deacons for Defense and Justice, which was part of the civil rights movement. He was one of the founding leaders and president of Club Desire, a non-profit organization that catered to needy children, president of the Avenue U YMCA for several years and was the oldest sustaining member of the Bogalusa Little League.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Catherine Taylor; one daughter, Patricia Slocum; four sons, Alvin, Eugene, Derolodi and Gregory Taylor; and one grandson, Stanley.

He leaves to cherish his memories one son, Alcie Taylor Jr.; four daughters, Mary Lillian (Siebert) Ross, Edna Earl (Harold) Butler, Mary Catherine and Angelica Taylor; a grandson and a great-granddaughter reared as a son and daughter, Darryl Darnell Taylor and Tonya Butler, and a host of family and friends.

Visitation will be Friday, Dec. 27, from 2-6 p.m. at Cook Richmond Funeral Home in Bogalusa, with funeral services on Saturday at 11 a.m. in the funeral home chapel, with the Rev. Darrell Self officiating. Interment will follow in Bogalusa Cemetery.
