Wilma Lee Fortenberry Crain, 83, departed this life Friday, Nov. 29, 2013, at Wynhoven Nursing Home in New Orleans.

She was born in Franklinton on July 23, 1930, to Wilma Lee Fortenberry was born July 23, 1930, the fifth of nine children of Lawyer and Clarice Blackwell Fortenberry. She accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age, and was a member of Greater Little Zion Missionary Baptist Church in New Orleans. Her favorite scripture was Psalms 23, and her favorite song was, “When You Hear of My Homegoing Don’t Worry About Me.” Her life’s motto was “Live right and God will take care of you.”

Wilma loved her family, and was a loving and caring mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and aunt. She was a devoted friend and humble servant of the Lord. Her favorite hobbies were garage sale shopping and watching her soap operas. She was a great cook and blessed her family and friends with many Christmas dinners and memories.

She leaves to cherish her memory, her loving and devoted daughter, Mary Fortenberry Dumas; her granddaughter, Tanja Dumas (Edmond) Nicholas of Gretna; two great-grandchildren, Lamar Jamal and Irianne Jamesia-Cortney Nicholas; a sister-in-law, Jescina Fortenberry; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Willis Crain; her parents; four brothers, B.M. (Sarah), Willie “Whoppea,” Dave (Bobby Nell) and Alvester; four sisters, Inez “Noog,” Elmer, Georgiana “Dorcee” and Clarice Fortenberry and her life companion, Sylvester Palmer.

Visitation was held Tuesday, Dec. 10 at Crain and Sons Funeral Home in Franklinton from 10 a.m. until time for the funeral service at 11 a.m. in the funeral home chapel, with the Rev. Terrance August officiating. Interment followed in Winan Cemetery in Franklinton.
