Franklinton and Mt. Hermon boys’ teams captured victories in the second day of the Mt. Hermon Yellow Jacket Tournament Thursday.

The Demons defeated Pine, 60-33, while Mt. Hermon topped Jewel Sumner, 59-53.

Franklinton found the range, knocking down nine 3-pointers in the victory. The Demons led 29-20 at halftime but outscored Pine 31-13 in the second half.

Tray Anders led all scorers with 22 points, while Nick Burkhalter added 12.

FHS coach Randall Ginn said his team was sparked by the return of Dejion Alston, who missed Wednesday’s game against Kentwood with a sprained ankle. Alston scored seven points.

“He set the tone for our players with his effort,” Ginn said.

Ginn said the Demons didn’t press but played good half-court defense, which he said the players are starting to develop pride in.

“Pine beat us a couple times last year after we lost Lester Crosby, so we respect their program,” Ginn said. “They’ll be fine once their football players get re-acclimated.”

Cody Cooper topped the Raiders with nine points, with Jordan Phelps next at eight.

First-year coach Eddie Vaughn said Franklinton is too strong and quick for the Raiders’ present skill level.

In the host team’s win, the Yellow Jackets trailed Sumner 22-20 at halftime.

Jessie Pouncey and Corterio Williams both had a big game. Pouncey paced Mt. Hermon with 24 points, while Williams put up 23.

It was the Yellow Jackets’ third game in three days.

“Tuesday and Wednesday were against physical teams,” Mt. Hermon coach B. Alford said. “We were beat down, but it might have been one of our better games. Tuesday was an overtime game, and Wednesday’s game ended about 10:30 (p.m.). Our kids are resilient, but they seemed a little sluggish Thursday.”

Mt. Hermon and Franklinton played in the tournament’s final game, which took place yesterday after press time.
