Mt. Hermon is hosting a basketball tournament beginning this evening and the event has a Washington Parish flavor.

Ten teams combined between boys and girls, eight local, are competing to win the single elimination event, which runs today, tomorrow and wraps up Saturday with the championship games.

Mt. Hermon coach B. Alford feels like people will see good basketball.

“We have girls teams that I think will make deep runs in the playoffs,” Alford said. “In the boys, I saw enough in the jamboree (at Varnado last Thursday) to know that when they add football players, they’ll be stronger.”

Four games are on tap the first two days with things starting at 5 p.m. and continuing at 6:15, 7:30 and 8:45.

Franklinton’s girls open things by going against Kentwood with the winner facing Jewel Sumner tomorrow at 5. Sumner has a bye.

The following game features the FHS and Kentwood boys. The victor plays tomorrow at 6:15 against Pine, which has a bye.

The 7:30 matchup is the host school’s girls’ team facing Varnado with the winner going against Pine at 7:30 tomorrow. The Lady Raiders have a bye.

Mt. Hermon and Varnado wrap things up at 8:45 tonight with the winning team squaring off against Sumner tomorrow at 8:45. Sumner is on a bye.

The girls’ title game is Saturday beginning at 6 p.m. with the boys’ title game at 7:30.
