Local fans have the opportunity to see eight of their basketball teams in action tomorrow evening at Varnado as the school is hosting a jamboree, with action tipping off at 5 p.m.

Varnado girls coach Lubertha Peters said they’ve been hosting the jamboree for about 10 years. She said it’s exciting, and she’s looking forward to seeing her team prior to its first regular season game, which is Nov. 25 at Pine.

“This will tell me what I need to work on by the time the first game starts,” Peters said.

The boys’ team has a new coach this season, Brad Oestriecher, who came over from Haynes Academy, where he spent three years. He replaced Paul Meyerchick, who is now coaching Franklinton’s girls’ team.

Oestriecher said he’s never hosted a jamboree and it will be good to get his feet wet in his first head coaching experience.

“I’m excited about it,” Oestriecher said. “I’m a little bit nervous, but more anxious than anything. I’m ready to get started.”

Twelve games are on tap starting every 20 minutes. The contests are 10 minutes long with a running clock.

The rest of the teams, both boys and girls, include Franklinton, Mt. Hermon and Pine.

Varnado’s boys advanced to the postseason last year and reached the bi-district round in Class 1A.

Mt. Hermon’s girls went to the regional round in 1A, while Franklinton was a bi-district team in 4A and Pine was a bi-district club in 2A.

Admission is $5.
