The Varnado High School FFA forestry team members competed in the Area Four Regional forestry contest, hosted by Louisiana State University and the Louisiana State FFA, on Oct. 3, 2013. The competition included compass and pacing, dendrology (tree identification), land survey map reading, silviculture thinning practicum, saw log and pulpwood estimation.

Timber is the largest cash crop in Louisiana, providing many career opportunities in the field of forestry.
