Lumberjacks and chainsaw carvers on display Halloween

Sawdust and Splinters, a combination event of world champion lumberjacks and nationally recognized chainsaw carvers, will be held Thurs-day through Saturday at Shirard Gray Estates, located between Magnolia, Miss., and Tylertown, Miss., off Highway 48 near the Bogue Chitto River.

Activities begin on Thursday at 11 a.m. with opening ceremonies, and from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. there will be chainsaw carving and spectator activities. Pro competition is set for noon and 3 p.m., and gates close at 5. On Friday, activities begin at 9 a.m. and on Saturday at 8 a.m., with gates closing at 5 p.m. each day.

Some of the events scheduled include an axe throw, double buck sawing, men’s underhand block chop, Jack and Jill (a male/female team bucking contest) and a pro open speed climb, with competitors scaling a 60-foot or a 90-foot pole and returning to the ground. Those events and many others will be on display at the three-day event.

There will be food, live music, arts and crafts vendors, children’s activities, portable sawmill demonstrations and much more. Cody Wise, an Elvis tribute artist, will perform on the entertainment stage Saturday at 11:30 a.m.

In addition, there will be a silent auction of items donated by local businesses, with all proceeds going directly to the Blair E. Batson Hospital for Children in Jackson, Miss. Winners will be announced on the final day of the event.

Tickets may be obtained in advance by phone at 601-876-9635 from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, or online at www.sdsfest. com. Advance tickets are $18, $20 and $23 for Thursday, Friday and Saturday. At the gate it will be $20 on Thursday, $22 on Friday and $25 on Saturday. Tickets are non-refundable. Checks, money orders, Mastercard or Visa accepted.

Bring lawn chairs and umbrellas, but no outside beverages or food.
