A quick response by Washington Parish Sheriff’s Office deputies resulted in the arrest of two Mississippi men who were allegedly passing counterfeit bills at the Washington Parish Free Fair.

On Wednesday, a fair midway vendor reported someone was at his booth attempting to make a purchase with what appeared to be a counterfeit $100 bill. Deputies responded quickly and apprehended two Sandy Hook, Miss., men in possession of more than $3,000 in counterfeit money.

The men, Rico Demond Haynes, 25, and Kelsey Rokee Collins, 18, were booked into the Washington Parish Jail and charged with monetary instrument abuse and theft by fraud. Additionally, Haynes is being held as a fugitive from Pike County, Miss., and Tylertown, Miss.

Bond was for each man was set at $10,000. If bond conditions are met, Haynes will be held for extradition to Mississippi.

If convicted of monetary instrument abuse, each man faces the possibility of a fine of up to $5,000 or imprisonment for up to 10 years, or both.

In addition, each man may be required to pay full restitution to any person who suffered a loss.

If convicted of theft by fraud, each man faces the possibility of a fine of not more than $1,000 or imprisonment for up to two years, or both.

Upon the discovery of the counterfeit bills,

Washington Parish investigators notified the U.S. Secret Service, which dispatched two agents to the jail to interview the two men. It is not known at this time what action the Secret Service might take in this matter.

Sheriff Randy Seal commended his deputies on the arrests.

“Once again, I want to emphasize our zero tolerance for any misbehavior at the fair,” he said.
