The 91st annual meeting of the Louisiana Farm Bureau State Convention was held recently at the Marriott Hotel in downtown New Orleans, and Washington Parish was well represented in the talent and queen contests.

The winner of the 2013 Washington Parish Junior Talent contest, Taylor Jarrell and Brylie Fowler, were chosen as second runners up in the State Junior Talent Contest.

The duo, who captured the audience with their fun and energetic dance and tumbling routine to “Do You Love Me” by the Contours, have been taking dance classes since they were 3 years old. Currently they are students at The Dancers’ Edge in Franklinton. Taylor, a fifth-grader at Bowling Green School, is the 10-year-old daughter of Lance and Debbie Jarrell of Franklinton. Brylie, also 10 and a fifth-grader at Franklinton Elementary School, is the daughter of Neil and Shannon Fowler of Franklinton. The girls also took gymnastics together this past year at Rodriguez Tumble and Cheer in Covington.

Adrienne McCain, the 18-year-old 2013 Washington Parish Farm Bureau Queen, competed against a field of 24 contestants from around the state, smiling through days of interviews, practice sessions, a fashion show, and many other appearances prior to the contest on Saturday night.

The daughter of Alan and Sue McCain of Franklinton, Adrienne attends Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, where she is a member of the girls soccer team. She has been very busy during her reign traveling around the state representing Washington Parish Farm Bureau at fairs, festivals and many other events. After college, Adrienne plans to become a flight attendant.

Farm Bureau, a non-profit, non-governmental entity, is the state’s largest general organization of farmers and ranchers, working to promote profitability for the state’s farmers through commodity and legislative action, while seeking grassroots producer input.

This year Washington Parish was presented with the Gold Star award for its contribution to promoting agriculture, and also received three Gold Stars for achievement in various program areas.

Washington Parish also received an Ag in the Classroom Mini-Grant.
